Meiosis is the process of sexual reproduction within gametes (sex cells). Meiosis starts with a diploid; a cell with 46 chromosomes. In the first step, the cell doubles the amount of chromosomes within it to 92. Following, Crossover occurs; when the sperm cell from a male organism and the egg cell from a female organism exchange genetic information in the chromosomes. This process ends with 2 cells with 46 chromosomes each. This is known as Meiosis Stage I. The process repeats (Meiosis II) for both cells, resulting in four non-identical cells with 23 chromosomes. These final cells are called haploids.
